Abstract
EFFECT OF SEED MATURITY ON VIABILITY AND VIGOR OF TWO GLUTINOUS RICE (Oryza sativa glutinous) ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted at the Seed Technology Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University from December to January 2013 to compare the effect of maturity on viability and vigor of two glutinous rice genotypes, to determine which genotype had the better viability and vigor and how seed maturity affected viability and vigor. The two genotypes used were : white glutinous rice and black glutinous rice. The second factor was seed maturity (25, 30, 35, 40 days after anthesis). Analysis of variance (ANOVA using F statistic) was used to determine whether the answered parameter were statistic significantly differential to 5% level sub quant analysis used Duncan NMRT also at the 5% level. Seed maturity affected the viability and vigor of both glutinous rice genotypes of all treatment, the black genotypes gave the highest viability and vigor (78,00% germination between days 5-14, 59% germinate at 5, 82,67% germination in pots) at 25 days after anthesis. For the white genotype the best result was obtained with seed harvested 35-40 days after anthesis whereas for the black genotypes the best seed were harvested 25-30 days after anthesis.
