Abstract

Syathariyah sufi order is one stream of Islam, the majority congregation embraced in West Sumatra, known to have teachings and religious traditions are deeply entrenched in the followers, one of which is inherited through traditional Islamic boarding schools (Salafiyah). This institution is a means to mobilize leaders and candidates for the “ulama” Syathariyah sufi order. When urang siak (students) considered a capable and qualified as a candidate scholars and leaders in the Syathariyah sufi order (tuanku), then he was confirmed in the procession of the “pengangkatan tuanku”, which is filled by a series of activities on the blend elements of Islam with traditional Minangkabau. This paper explores the “pengangkatan tuanku” procession in traditional Islamic boarding school in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra, generated through field research, and the paradigm qualitative approach. Data were analyzed using the concept of social identity. Pengangkatan tuanku procession In the traditional Islamic boarding school tradition is one of the efforts to preserve the identity as the Syathariyah sufi order community.
