Abstract

The purpose of this training was to improve Junior High School students’ skills in spoken English, which included accent, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The participants of this English training were Junior High School students from poor families in Korong Gadang, Kuranji subdistrict in Padang city. The training was held for 3 months or for 24 meetings, those were from July to October 2009. The place of the training was in the village chief office in Korong Gadang, Kuranji subdistrict. The English instructors conducted the interviews to the Junior High School students before, while, and after the training, to see the improvement of their spoken English. The methods of the English training were Actional Functional Model, Total Physical Response, Discussion, Role play, and Games. The results of this training were the methods applied above could improve the speaking skills of the Junior High School students became better, which included accent, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The weaknesses of this training were the training still run during the fasting month and post earthquake condition in West Sumatra, so they could decrease the attendance of the students to follow the English training.
