Abstract

In continuation of our work on the chemistry of biologically active constituents of Sumatran plants it was found that the basic ethyl acetate fraction of the methanolic extract of the leaves of Anthocephalus cadamba Miq. sholved significant activity with LC30 273,90 µg/ml when tested by "Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay". This active fraction was then column chromatographed with step gradient polarity elution by using an increasing amount of ethyl acetate in hexane. Fractions having the same Rr values were combined, evaporated and tested for its activity. The active fraction was then rechrornatographed, retested, purified and identified. From the active fraction was isolated one pentacyclic triterpenoid compound and an isomer of indole alkaloid compound. The triterpenoid cornpound was isolated as needles wiih a melting point of 268-269oC and based on its spectroscopic data it rvas identified as ursolic acid and showed LC30 26,24 µg/ml. torvard "Brine Shrimp Test". The isomer of indole alkaloid compound was identified as valesiachotamine and isovalesiachotamine with LC30 > 1000 µg/ml. Keyrvords : Brine shrimp test, leaves of Anthocephalus cadamba Miq., LC30
