Abstract

Medicinal plant called Aka Baguak, (Stephania hernandifolia Walp.: Menispermaceae) is one of the important sources of alkaloid found in its wholeorgan. A crude extract alkaloid ethyl-3 isolated from tuber indicated some positive pharmacological effects but its toxicity effects is less know.n A preliminary study on its acute toxicity effect on albino mouse (Mus musculus L) was conducted by using experimental method with completely randomized design in factorial pattern. Male albino mice were treated with several dose levels of alkaloid (0, 25,50, and 75 mg/kg of body weight or bw) for24,48 and 72 hours of exposure periods. Blood samples were collected at the end of treatment then analyzed for its erythrocyte and leucocyte counts and total protein plasm consentration. It was found that the substance caused acute toxicity effect on albino mice indicated by significantly decline in erythrocyte count at the dosages 50 mg/kg bw for 72 hours of exposure period and at 75 mg/kg bw for 24, 48, 72 hours of exposure periods. Leucocyte count showed significantly increasing only at the dosage 75 mg/kg bw for 24 hours of exposult period and total protein plasm concentration significantly decreased at 50 and 75 mg/kg bw for 24 and 72 hours of expsure periods. Based on safety category, it belong to very toxic to very higly toxic substance. Key Words : alkaloid Stephania hernandifolia, acute toxicity
