Abstract
An antimicrobial component was successfully isolated from aethyl acetate fraction of Teclona grandis Linn. F (Bark) which was guided by antimicrobial dilution method. Separation and purification were done by chromatographic methods. The active compound namely EV-19-19 (35 mg, m.p 230-232 "C) showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 (MIC 100 ppm), Stapylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 (MIC 50 ppm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442 (MIC 50 ppm), Eschericia coli ATCC 8739 (MIC 50 ppm) and Tricophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 543 (MIC 50 ppm). While the compound showed no activity against Candida albicans ATCC 1023. Based on the spectral data (ultraviolet, infrared) and chemical reactions, the compound was identified as steroidal compound.
