Abstract

A new type of organic-inorganic hybrid composite was prepared by sol-gel process. Fifty percent epoxidized natrual rubber (ENR-50) was used in the process. The silica and titania that constituted the inorganic phase was produced by the hydrolysis and conden-sation of metal alkoxides, from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and tetrabuthylorthotitaniat (TiBT). The composition of the composites were varied by changing the ENR-50 with the relative amount of TEOS and TiBT. Thermogravimetry analysis showed that decompo-sition begin at 425 to 465 oC. Thin filem casting from material having a relatively low ENR content were transparent, rigid and brittle while those with high ENR content were flexible, transparent and slight colouration. The UV-Vis analysis showed that the absorp-tion started at 200 to 320 nm. FT-IR analysis showed peaks at 3441 cm-l for OH, 2974 crn-t for C-C and CH bands,2945 cm-tcan be attributed to Si-OH, 1464 cm-rand 1368 cm-t for CH and CH:, rc75 cm-' for Si-O-Si, Si-O-Ti and793 cm-l peak Si-O-Si. Scanning elecfion microscopy showed that the surface consist the particles of 1.2 prm to 2.75 yrrin the composite are slightly inhomogeneous at micro scope level.
