Abstract

Engel’s theory states that the greater household’s income so the percentage of food expenditure also tends to be smaller compare to the total expenditure. Besides the income factor, the pattern of consumption is also influenced by household size, working status and formal education of head of household. In order to understand the functional relationships between those factors, logistic regression model is deployed. Based on the logistic regression analysis, there are several important point can be reveal: (1) The biggest proportion of expenditure of poor household is used for food (64.0 %). (2) There is a tendency that the poorer of household so the percentage of food consumption is also greater. (3) For household in the category of low expenditure, the variables that significantly influence consumption pattern are education and working status of head of household. (4) For household in the category of middle expenditure, the variables that significantly influence consumption pattern are education of head of household and household size. (5) For household in the category of high expenditure, the variable that significantly influence consumption pattern is household size. According to the finding, this thesis presents several suggestions: (1) Government should support and empower poor household to enhance economic capability. (2) Empowerment can be done by through local economic improvement. (3) Government provides several courses to equip the poor with basic and practical skills. (4) Government gives financial assistance and guidance for poor household especially who work in informal sectors. (5) Promotion of family planning to reduce the number of household members.
