Abstract

The research reve�als forms of strategies of peasant houshold dealing with the market economy taking place in rural urea. Using an anthropological approach, the research focuses on economic activities carried out by the peasant community in Tanah Datar. The main assumption of the research is that the economic activity is a parf of social mechanism. The results of the research show that strategies for survive� economically are on integral part of daily social activities. Therefore, peasants maintain their social interests as well as economic survive. The most important institution that should be taken into consideration in this situation is market. As one of economic insfitution, market plays an important role to influence the existence of houshold economy, kin relationtships and custom. The market becomes the main aspect of houshold strategies. In other words, a market mechanism occurced is the most important element in the community that challenges for the social performance they should carry out. In this context, the mechanism to some extent, repre�sents the pattern of the market economy.
