Abstract

How is the role of woman in cattle production in West Sumatera was the major problem faced by the research. The objectives of this research are motivation, time allocated by women in production system and contribution of the cattle production earn to family income. On the basis of these, it is expected that criterias for the development cattle producion. The research were executed in four districts of Agam regency from July to September 2000. The district was purposively selected based on consideration that 50 % of household kept cattle. Data were collected from 38 farm-houshold that were purposively selected according to criterias kept one or more cattle. Women in the selected farm-house-hold were deeply interviewed concerning on various aspect of the cattle production. The data collected were codified and classified according to various subjects. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were applied to the data available. Result of this research, it was found that woman motivation for saving, try and error and bussiness. Woman allocate about 1.8 hour per day (23.59 % of total time spending 6 AM to 6 PM) of their time per day in caattle production activities. The contribuiion value of woman for family income was Rp 207.984,2 per month. It was 12,62 % from total activities and just only 3,62 % from cattle production.
