Abstract

This research is focused on students movement in the period of bringing into bear upon NKK/BKK to "reformation" era, especially in west sumatra. Students as an indispensable part of the society have tried to uncover their character by putting themselves into action, particularly to protest despotism, and to hold a demonstration. ln this province when NKK/BKK was exercised to incite, to restrict and to induce students in order not to resist goverment policy, therefore this 'technique' was strongly effective to them. In effect, from 1978 to 1997 the dynamics of students activities were rather piled up in forms of arts, Boy Scouts, Resimen Mahasiswa (students with military discipline), etc. Therefore, both students protest and moral force disappeared for a quite long time. This type of exercise of power by bureaucrats was recognized as succesfull firm. Nevertheless, in early 1998 students movement suddenly erupted to stop Soeharto's acceptance. The method used in this study is that of qualitative. This is to sharpen the analysis, the writer uses historical method: heuristics, critics, interpretation and historiography. The cornmon plattbrm cf this qualitative and historical method is on hewistics. For the study is contemporary history, the technique of interview is the important means, the writer had interviews with the doers of the event. The progress of students force in West Sumatra has its raise and fall. When "angkatan 66" came into being, this region had highly dynamism of students action, but since 1978 it turned into decline. Students movements has already risen in West Sumatra in "refonnation"era, they have been brought into action through demonstration. One of its climax was student action held in front of governor office. It was estimated that there were more and less 80.000 students set about assembiing from many universities in West Sumatra. Collapse of Orde Baru (New Order) was aiso foilowed by the collapse of students resistance in West Sumatra. Some studgnts movements emerging have shown disparate end if we compare it before the collapse of New Order. Even if in the end of this regime, students movements still introduced their idealism as a moral force, but since Soeharto has linished there has obviously been an indication thet students rnovement has been seduced by other interests especially by money politics.
