Abstract
Observation of ethylene emited by single tomato (Lycopersikum esculentum) fruit was made possible utilizing a very sensitive photoacoustic spectrometer capable of sub-ppb level of gas detection. The spectrometer was equipped with a gas mixer for flow through system. Emission of ethylene dropped to one tenth of the normal level when the stem-scar was plugged using parafilm and went back to normal level when the plug was taken off. When the gas flowing through the fruit was made without oxygen, the anaerobic condition completely stopped. The emission of the ethylene, however, ethylene was produced slightly above the normal level immeditialy after the flowing gas was switched to normal air. Carbon dioxide and low temperature decrease production of ethylene. Producion of ethylene increased as the temperature of fruit raised from room to 42o C at which temperature the prodoction started to decrease until finally completely stopped at temperature of 63o C.
